Emirates Engineering Achieves GCAA Design Approval for Major Modifications

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Emirates Engineering has made history as the first company in the UAE to secure Design Organisation Approval (DOA) from the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) for substantial aircraft modifications through Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs). This pivotal achievement empowers Emirates to design and certify significant changes to aircraft independently, significantly elevating aviation standards in the UAE.

With this GCAA certification, Emirates Engineering can now execute major modifications and design tasks in-house, eliminating the need for reliance on external manufacturers or third-party organizations. The certification enhances Emirates' control over product development, timelines, and specifications, leading to more expedient fleet upgrades.

According to Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operating Officer of Emirates, this approval will transform how aircraft modifications are approached. The internal capability for design and certification allows Emirates to set its own priorities and timelines while bolstering the airline's growth at Dubai World Central (DWC). He extended gratitude to the GCAA for laying down the regulatory groundwork for this achievement.

Aqeel Al Zarooni, GCAA's Assistant Director-General for Aviation Safety Affairs, remarked that the accreditation of Emirates Engineering marks a significant step forward for the aviation engineering landscape in the UAE. It showcases the robustness of the regulatory framework and enhances the capabilities of maintenance and engineering providers to comply with global standards.

This DOA certification expands Emirates Engineering’s existing minor modification capabilities, now permitting major cabin reconfigurations and intricate design alterations. It encompasses both Airbus and Boeing aircraft types, providing the airline with increased flexibility across its fleet. The improved capabilities enable Emirates to conduct large retrofitting projects more efficiently, reduce expenditures, and foster innovation in cabin design and technology.

Over the recent six months, Emirates Engineering has augmented its design organisation by hiring expert engineers and refining processes to align with GCAA criteria. The design team is set to grow from five to over thirteen specialists, with further expansion on the horizon. This development positions Emirates among an elite group of airlines globally that possess in-house major design and certification capabilities.

The DOA approval is instrumental to Emirates' fleet refurbishment strategy for its Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. This autonomy over modification timelines will facilitate quicker upgrades and efficient implementations. Additionally, it paves the way for future cabin innovations, component production, and local manufacturing, thereby enhancing intellectual property growth within the UAE.

The approval is in line with the expansion of Emirates' maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities at Dubai World Central, where advanced design capabilities will be central to long-term engineering, production, and innovation initiatives. This milestone reinforces Emirates’ position as a leader in aviation and highlights the UAE’s commitment to advancing aerospace engineering.
