Etihad Airways has unveiled plans to launch seven new direct routes from Abu Dhabi—a move designed to enhance point‑to‑point connectivity and position the capital as a key regional hub. These new destinations include Almaty (Kazakhstan), Baku (Azerbaijan), Bucharest (Romania), Medina (Saudi Arabia), Tbilisi (Georgia), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), and Yerevan (Armenia). The initiative marks Etihad’s continued effort to diversify its route network and support Abu Dhabi’s development as a modern, connected city.

This announcement brings the number of new destinations added by Etihad in 2025 to 27, reflecting an aggressive growth strategy focused on linking culturally rich and emerging markets directly with the UAE capital. By attracting visitors from Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, Etihad is reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a thriving international gateway for tourism, business, and culture.

Route Launch Schedule and Booking Details

Ticket sales for the new routes will begin shortly, with flights set to commence in two phases. Medina service will launch in November 2025, while the rest will start by March 2026. Antigua Timelines include six weekly flights to Medina, and eight to ten weekly flights to most other destinations. These additions aim to cater to both spiritual travelers and business/passenger demand.

Etihad’s strategy includes a balanced frequency approach, ensuring enough capacity to test market interest while maintaining flexibility. Travelers and travel agents can expect flight schedules, fares, and booking options to be available within the next few weeks, allowing for early planning of visits to these culturally significant cities.

Why These Destinations Matter

Each of the new cities serves a strategic purpose. Medina is Islam’s second-holiest city, making it a key destination for religious tourism. The other six cities—Almaty, Baku, Bucharest, Tbilisi, Tashkent, and Yerevan—are fast-emerging markets with growing tourism appeal, expanding economies, and rich cultural heritage. They also represent underserved routes that travelers previously had to access via long transfers.

By linking these cities directly to Abu Dhabi, Etihad aims to tap into demand from business professionals, tourists, families, and faith-based pilgrims, while boosting outbound tourism from the UAE. These routes offer passengers a smoother, faster, and more comfortable travel option that bypasses circuitous connections through Dubai or Doha.

Leadership Vision: Point‑to‑Point Growth

Etihad’s CEO, Antonoaldo Neves, emphasized the importance of direct service: "Our goal is clear—we want to bring more people directly to Abu Dhabi." He noted that flights to “fast‑growing, culturally rich regions” would stimulate demand for both tourism and trade. This aligns his strategy with broader economic goals for the city and emirate, seeking to draw new visitors and investors through improved connectivity.

Aligning with Abu Dhabi’s Economic Vision

The expanded network directly supports Abu Dhabi’s wider economic diversification goals. With targeted connectivity, the emirate hopes to foster cultural exchange, create new business relationships, and expand its tourism base. These routes also serve nationals and residents with personal or work ties to these markets, simplifying travel and strengthening people-to-people links.

Aircraft and Operational Deployment

Etihad plans to use its A320-family aircraft, including new A321LR jets, for these routes. These single-aisle planes are well-suited for medium-haul flights, allowing efficient service to emerging destinations. Frequent schedules and dedicated service reflect Etihad’s commitment to quality and maintain its brand reputation for hospitality.

Boosting Cargo and Trade Links

Beyond passenger traffic, the new routes are expected to increase cargo connectivity between Abu Dhabi and each destination. Central Asia and Eastern Europe are growing trade partners, and direct flights will improve logistics capabilities. Exporters will benefit from increased freight capacity, simplifying the UAE’s trade routes.

Complementing Seasonal and Existing Services

This expansion complements Etihad’s other 2026 launches, such as seasonal services to Kraków, Salalah, and Kazan. Together, these additions reflect a strategic mix of year-round and seasonal flights designed to capture both regular travel demand and peak tourism periods.

Enhancing Abu Dhabi International Airport

To support the influx of new flights and passengers, Abu Dhabi International Airport has upgraded its facilities. Enhanced terminals, lounges, visa services, and ground operations systems are in place to provide a smooth, efficient travel experience that aligns with Etihad’s brand standards.

Building on Competitor Gaps

These route launches follow the recent exit of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi from similar markets in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, creating an opportunity for Etihad to fill the demand void with direct service. This strategic move reinforces Etihad’s market share and regional role as the GO‑TO carrier for these destinations.

Travel Industry and Consumer Impact

Tour operators and travel agents have welcomed the new flights, citing easier itineraries and more flexible options. For tourists, pilgrims, and business travelers, Etihad’s direct connections will reduce travel time and cost. These new routes could lead to attractive package deals, round‑trips, and multi‑city itineraries centered on Abu Dhabi.

Route Evaluation and Future Prospects

Etihad will closely monitor load factors, revenue patterns, and seasonal peaks for each route. Depending on traveler demand and market growth, the airline may adjust flight frequency or introduce additional services. Positive initial performance may lay the groundwork for future links to other emerging cities.

Etihad’s Broader 2025 Vision

These seven routes form part of Etihad’s plan to launch 10 more new destinations before the end of 2025, alongside locations already announced for this year. The airline aims to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s international connectivity with a diversified mix of cultural, business, seasonal, and religious travel services.

A Strategically Connected Future

Through this announcement, Etihad demonstrates a clear intention to strengthen Abu Dhabi’s role in global aviation. By offering direct services to culturally significant and fast-developing destinations, the airline not only improves convenience for travelers but also supports broader economic and cultural objectives. As 2026 approaches, Abu Dhabi is set to be more connected than ever, reinforcing its place as a modern, diverse and globally linked capital.
