The UAE is set to introduce its first passenger rail services as Etihad Rail partners with global rail operator Keolis. The announcement was made at Global Rail 2025 in Abu Dhabi, showcasing the country’s plans to revolutionize transportation. This partnership brings together Etihad Rail’s extensive railway infrastructure with Keolis’ international experience in managing passenger networks in 13 countries.
Nationwide Rail Network
Once operational, the passenger rail will cover the UAE’s 900 km national railway network, stretching from Ghuwaifat at the Saudi border to Fujairah on the east coast. Currently, this network is used mainly for freight services, but the introduction of passenger trains will provide a fast, safe, and environmentally friendly travel option for residents and visitors.
Modern Travel Experience
The new rail service will focus on passenger comfort, featuring state-of-the-art amenities and a smooth connection with existing transport infrastructure. This integration aims to make commuting and intercity travel easier and more convenient, offering a modern and reliable alternative to road transport.
Sustainable Transportation
Sustainability is a core element of the project. Passenger trains will employ green solutions aligned with the UAE’s national goals for environmental protection and energy efficiency. By reducing dependence on road transport, the rail network supports the country’s long-term commitment to sustainable development.
Enhancing Connectivity
The rail project will connect major cities and economic hubs, boosting trade, tourism, and mobility across the Emirates. Travelers can expect efficient scheduling, timely services, and seamless connections with other modes of transport, improving overall urban and intercity travel.
Part of “Projects of the 50”
The passenger rail initiative is part of the UAE’s “Projects of the 50” plan, aimed at enhancing economic growth, technological innovation, and national connectivity. By providing a high-quality and sustainable transportation alternative, the project contributes to the UAE’s long-term vision of modernizing infrastructure while supporting economic development.
Focus on World-Class Operations
The 2026 launch timeline reflects careful planning and a commitment to world-class operations. Authorities and partners are emphasizing safety, reliability, and efficiency to ensure the rail service meets international standards and provides long-term benefits for residents and tourists.
The introduction of passenger trains marks a significant step toward modern mobility in the UAE. It demonstrates the country’s ambition to become a leader in innovative transportation solutions while improving daily travel and supporting environmental goals.
With Etihad Rail and Keolis leading this historic project, the UAE is preparing to redefine travel across its major cities. The passenger rail network is expected to become a cornerstone of sustainable urban mobility and intercity connectivity, reflecting the country’s commitment to growth, innovation, and quality of life for all residents and visitors.
