On Thursday, military units from France and Germany touched down in Greenland as Denmark, together with its European partners, commenced preparations for collaborative military drills. These exercises aim to bolster Arctic defense against U.S. apprehensions regarding the island's safety, particularly after President Trump indicated a desire for the U.S. to obtain Greenland.
This self-governing Danish territory, known for its strategic importance and abundant mineral resources, has gained the interest of both the U.S. and other global powers. Trump claimed that Greenland should avoid falling under the sway of Russia or China, suggesting Denmark might not have the capability to protect it. He mentioned that all options, including military measures, are under consideration to safeguard U.S. interests.
Denmark and Greenland have categorically denied these assertions, affirming that the island is not on the market and cautioning against any threats or aggressive actions, which could undermine global standards. Several European nations, including Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway, have rallied behind Denmark, stressing that unilateral U.S. actions could harm NATO's credibility.
In light of rising tensions, military preparations by Denmark and Greenland have intensified, collaborating closely with NATO allies. European troops are gearing up for more extensive exercises later this year. The German military has sent a reconnaissance unit of 13 personnel to Nuuk, while additional French forces are on their way, clearly communicating a message of deterrence to Washington.
Experts highlight that these deployments serve dual objectives: to exhibit readiness to defend Greenland and to convey that Denmark is addressing U.S. security concerns earnestly. Danish officials confirmed that the Danish Armed Forces, alongside their European counterparts, will explore ways to enhance Arctic defense and monitor the area more effectively.
Following discussions at the White House with U.S. leaders, Denmark and Greenland agreed to establish a working group focused on security and strategic matters. However, they reaffirmed that the U.S. pursuit of acquiring Greenland is unacceptable and breaches Danish sovereignty.
Recent footage from Nuuk airport depicted Danish military personnel arriving for the exercises, highlighting the growing European commitment to safeguarding Greenland. France reiterated that NATO and EU backing is vital for the overall security of the Arctic region, sending a powerful message to the United States and other global players.
