At the core of Abu Dhabi’s utility system, EWEC’s Load Despatch Centre acts as the operational nerve centre that keeps electricity and water services stable and secure. It balances supply and demand in real time while coordinating resources to ensure homes, businesses and industry receive uninterrupted service.
The centre's responsibilities were consolidated in January 2022 when operations moved from TRANSCO (now TAQA Transmission) to EWEC. That transfer tightened operational control across generation and transmission, allowing EWEC to run scheduling, load dispatch, production control and network oversight with greater coordination and efficiency.
Today the LDC manages flows from 17 production plants, 166 high-voltage substations and 52 high-pressure water pumping stations. Using SCADA alongside Generation and Energy Management Systems, the centre sustains grid stability and supports seamless ties with local and regional networks.
Beyond routine operations, the LDC is central to integrating solar and wind generation into Abu Dhabi's mix. By maintaining frequency and voltage stability and using predictive analytics and real-time telemetry, it dynamically selects which plants to bring online or take offline, optimising costs and reducing dependence on gas-fired units.
Aligned with the Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 — which targets 60% of electricity from clean and renewable sources — the LDC is upgrading its toolset. Deployments include Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and enhanced forecasting to manage the variability of solar and wind output.
Water security remains a strategic priority. EWEC is accelerating reverse osmosis desalination projects to decouple water production from power generation. These new facilities are set to increase desalinated output by 30% to 1.32 million cubic metres per day and reduce carbon intensity by 93% by 2031, with an ultimate target of 3.5 million cubic metres daily to meet around 92% of projected demand sustainably.
Underpinning these initiatives is an intelligent control framework that continuously assesses grid health, anticipates demand spikes and adjusts operations. Managing more than 100 generation units, the LDC prepares daily schedules, prioritises cost-effective resources and sequences maintenance to minimise disruptions.
Looking forward, EWEC is integrating AI-driven analytics, smarter distribution networks and advanced battery storage to boost flexibility and reliability as urbanisation and renewable integration reshape the system.
Combining digital tools with engineering know-how, EWEC's Load Despatch Centre remains a key enabler of Abu Dhabi's transition to a more sustainable, resilient energy and water future.
