In a major boost to the UAE’s scientific and regulatory credibility, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation’s (FANR) Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL) has officially joined the Consultative Committee for Ionizing Radiation (CCRI) under the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM).
This recognition, confirmed during the CCRI meeting held in Minamisoma City, Japan, places the UAE among a select group of nations contributing directly to the establishment of global measurement standards in ionizing radiation. FANR’s SSDL is now the first laboratory in the Gulf region to achieve this prestigious milestone — a testament to the UAE’s growing technical strength and international trust in its measurement capabilities.
Established in 2018, the SSDL plays a crucial role in ensuring radiation safety and accuracy across healthcare, industry, and the nuclear sector. The lab calibrates radiation measuring instruments used nationwide, ensuring they meet strict international standards. Its work supports FANR’s mission to maintain public, worker, and environmental protection while aligning with global best practices.
FANR’s laboratory also leads regionally as Chair of the GULFMET Technical Committee for Ionizing Radiation. Through this role, it promotes cooperation, harmonisation, and capacity building among Gulf metrology institutions — advancing collective expertise in radiation measurement and safety.
This achievement strengthens the UAE’s position in the Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development Index, reflecting its commitment to international standards and technical excellence. The inclusion of FANR’s SSDL in the CCRI underscores not only scientific credibility but also the country’s dedication to contributing to the world’s measurement and safety ecosystem.
