A tragic escalation of violence occurred in Thailand's Narathiwat province when armed assailants attacked a security checkpoint, resulting in the deaths of five paramilitary soldiers and injuries to six civilians, as reported by the army.
This incident unfolded on Wednesday evening at the Buketa Sami checkpoint, an area notorious for ongoing separatist conflict.
According to military sources, the attackers employed firearms and pipe bombs against the Task Force Ranger Regiment 45 members stationed at the checkpoint.
No group has yet claimed responsibility, and law enforcement has not reported any arrests related to the assault.

The military expressed deep respect for the fallen soldiers, stating their "service and sacrifice will be remembered and honoured with the highest respect."
Authorities have characterized this assault as one of the gravest attacks on Thai security forces in recent times, reigniting concerns over the persistent violence in Southern Thailand.
This attack followed closely after a car bomb explosion outside the old Tanyong police station in Narathiwat, which occurred just a day prior.
That blast injured one police officer and led to damage of property. Police are currently pursuing two suspects last seen fleeing on a motorcycle after the explosion.
As reported by reports, this marked the first confirmed car bombing in Southern Thailand this year.
The southern provinces, notably Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala, have large ethnic Malay Muslim populations and have long been at the heart of an armed separatist struggle since 2004.
The ongoing conflict has claimed over 7,000 lives, inclusive of civilians, security personnel, and combatants.
Formal peace negotiations between the Thai government and the main separatist group, the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), are anticipated to resume in June amid escalating violence.
However, these discussions have struggled to overcome critical issues like self-governance, security protocols, and political representation.
