Florida Bishops Call for Suspension of Deportations During Holidays

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Catholic bishops in Florida have formally requested Donald Trump to impose a temporary suspension on immigration enforcement actions throughout the Christmas season, voicing concerns over humanitarian impacts and the anxiety building within immigrant populations. However, the White House has confirmed that enforcement activities will persist as scheduled.

This appeal was led by Thomas Wenski, Archbishop of Miami, alongside seven other members of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops. In their written statement, Wenski acknowledged the administration's commitment to border security while contending that current enforcement strategies are disproportionately impacting many non-criminal immigrants.

“The border is secure, and a significant part of the operation to remove dangerous criminals has been accomplished,” Wenski stated. “Currently, broad enforcement initiatives are inadvertently raiding those who are not criminals but are simply here to work and care for their families.”

The archbishop raised concerns that stringent enforcement has instilled fear not just in undocumented individuals but also among legal residents, their families, and entire communities. Wenski noted that this atmosphere of dread has disrupted family lives, job stability, and church activities across Florida.

In an appeal for mercy during the holiday period, the bishops urged the federal authorities to halt arrests and rounds-up until after Christmas. “A pause would demonstrate a humane respect for the families impacted,” Wenski pointed out, emphasizing that enforcement actions should reflect both legal obligations and ethical considerations.

The White House dismissed the bishops’ request. In a terse email reply, spokesperson Abigail Jackson confirmed that the president remains steadfast on his commitments. “President Trump was elected for his promise to deport criminal illegal aliens, and he is upholding that promise,” she mentioned, not addressing the Christmas suspension request.

Archbishop Wenski has been a longstanding advocate for more compassionate immigration policies. Earlier this year, he convened with fellow Catholic leaders at Georgetown University to decry harsh immigration measures, asserting that they have exacerbated familial separations, heightened fears, and disrupted community life.

He also underscored the critical role immigrants play in vital U.S. sectors like agriculture, healthcare, construction, and services. “Many employers will tell you that some of their most consistent and hardworking employees are immigrants,” Wenski asserted. “While enforcement is a crucial aspect of immigration policy, it must be conducted rationally and humanely.”

In his outreach initiatives, Wenski has engaged with the “Knights on Bikes” ministry, set up by the Knights of Columbus, which addresses the spiritual needs of individuals in immigration detention. He reflected on moments spent praying by a remote detention facility in the Florida Everglades and later receiving permission to conduct Mass within.

“Inviting detainees to prayer, even under such inhumane conditions, is a way of affirming their dignity,” Wenski remarked.

Despite the bishops' pleas, federal authorities have indicated no shift in policy, highlighting the ongoing discord between immigration enforcement priorities and the urge for compassion during the holiday season.
