G42 Secures US Green Light for Advanced AI Chip Exports

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

UAE's G42 is poised for significant momentum following the White House's approval for the export of advanced AI semiconductors to the firm. This pivotal shift moves the UAE–US AI corridor from concept to actionable steps, highlighting robust bilateral confidence and a mutual dedication to secure AI infrastructure.

This breakthrough is anticipated to speed up various essential projects in the UAE, including Stargate UAE, a 1-gigawatt AI computing cluster being engineered by G42 for OpenAI. This initiative is backed by various renowned global tech firms like Oracle, Cisco, NVIDIA, and SoftBank Group, and is a key aspect of the larger UAE–US AI Campus, which aims to create a 5-gigawatt AI infrastructure network capable of delivering expansive computing power and fast AI processing for the entire region.

The development also fortifies partnerships with leading US technology firms and chip manufacturers, including Microsoft, AMD, Qualcomm, and Cerebras, enhancing technological collaborations across both nations. The rollout of these advanced chips will occur under a meticulously crafted regulatory framework known as the Regulated Technology Environment (RTE), established by G42 and sanctioned by the US Department of Commerce and Bureau of Industry and Security guidelines, ensuring the safe and legal application of American technology in expansive AI structures.

Peng Xiao, Group CEO of G42, remarked on the importance of this achievement, stating it signifies a transformative moment for both G42 and its clients. He pointed out that the shared infrastructure approach sets a standard for secure and efficient computing, benefitting both the UAE and the US while fostering mutual trust throughout.

The UAE has notably emerged as the only nation in the region boasting an AI infrastructure of such magnitude, fully compliant with US export mandates and regulatory frameworks. Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Secretary-General of the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council, emphasized this approval as a testament to the deep-seated trust between the UAE and the US. He noted that technology not only serves as an instrument for advancement but also as a platform for sustainment, collaborative long-term efforts, and regional harmony.

Currently, G42 manages three of the global Top500 supercomputers, including the region's second and third largest. The company unveiled recently its Maximus-01 supercomputer in New York, which ranks 20th on the global scale. Its AI infrastructure extends across various locations including the UAE, France, and the United States, covering California, Minnesota, Texas, and New York.

With this US export approval, G42 expects to boost its current AI endeavors, enhance US-UAE technological ties, and solidify the UAE’s role as a pivotal center for secure and cutting-edge AI technologies on a global platform.

This advancement underscores the UAE’s escalating responsibilities in high-performance computing and its capability to assimilate global AI advancements while adhering to stringent international compliance mandates.
