GCC Workshop Develops Environmental Index to Track Sustainability

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The GCC Statistical Centre recently hosted a regional workshop on the Components of the GCC Environmental Performance Index. Specialists and experts from all GCC countries attended the workshop. The main goal was to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in environmental statistics and share knowledge among the countries.

Focus on Sharing Knowledge and Building Skills

The workshop focused on exchanging best practices among GCC countries. Experts discussed how to improve national capabilities for monitoring and analyzing environmental indicators. These indicators help countries understand their environmental performance and identify areas that need improvement.

A Key Step in Regional Environmental Cooperation

Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, President of the Environment Authority, said the workshop is an important milestone. It shows GCC countries’ commitment to keeping up with global environmental developments. The event also helps build a unified tool to measure environmental policies and practices. This tool will provide accurate indicators to decision-makers, reflecting both national and regional priorities, as well as international commitments.

Building a Unified Environmental Index

Dr. Al Amri explained that the workshop allows countries to share expertise and strengthen joint efforts. The goal is to develop the GCC Environmental Performance Index, a tool that reflects the sustainability priorities of GCC countries. This index can track progress on environmental issues and measure the effectiveness of policies.

Oman’s Commitment to Sustainability

The Sultanate of Oman, through its Environment Authority, is committed to working closely with other GCC countries. Oman aims to enhance environmental integration in line with Oman Vision 2040. This vision includes international commitments to protect the environment and address climate change. The workshop helps Oman and other GCC countries coordinate their environmental efforts.

Strategic Tool for Policy Development

Intisar bint Abdullah Al Wahaibi, Director-General of the GCC Statistical Centre, said the workshop also focused on how to prepare the GCC Environmental Performance Index. This index is a strategic tool for measuring and analyzing environmental performance. It helps compare GCC countries at regional and international levels, supporting the development of data-driven environmental policies.

Facing Environmental Challenges

Al Wahaibi highlighted that environmental sustainability is necessary because of challenges like water scarcity, climate change, and air pollution in the region. The GCC Environmental Performance Index helps countries evaluate their progress, set priorities, and strengthen joint action on environmental issues that affect all countries.

Comparing GCC with International Standards

The index allows GCC countries to compare their environmental performance with international standards. It shows what has been achieved and identifies areas needing improvement. This creates a strong foundation for long-term sustainable planning in the region.

GCC Countries Show Real Progress

Al Wahaibi added that GCC countries have shown that hard work leads to real results. Oman made a major improvement in the Global Environmental Performance Index, moving up over 100 places in just two years to become second in the Middle East.

Achievements of Other GCC Countries

The UAE ranked first regionally due to its efforts in improving air quality and expanding green spaces. Qatar made progress by reducing water consumption and conserving natural resources. Kuwait improved air quality and reduced emissions. Saudi Arabia focused on protecting the marine environment. Bahrain made important advances in waste management and expanding green areas.

Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

These results show that all GCC countries are committed to improving environmental sustainability. They demonstrate real progress in achieving positive environmental performance indicators. The workshop and the index help ensure that countries continue to work together toward common environmental goals.

Environmental Index Supports Long-Term Goals

Al Wahaibi emphasized that developing the GCC Environmental Performance Index is not the final goal. Instead, it is a tool to strengthen national and regional environmental policies. The index helps integrate environmental considerations with economic and social development. It also improves global competitiveness by showing the clear commitment of GCC countries to environmental protection.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

The GCC Environmental Performance Index encourages collaboration between countries. It allows them to learn from each other, adopt best practices, and implement policies that support sustainable development. By working together, GCC countries can tackle regional environmental challenges more effectively.

Tool for Sustainable Planning

Overall, the workshop and the development of the index will help GCC countries plan for the future. Accurate environmental data and effective monitoring systems allow governments to make informed decisions. This ensures that environmental sustainability becomes a central part of national and regional development plans.

A United Approach to Sustainability

The GCC workshop demonstrates the region’s dedication to protecting the environment. By sharing knowledge, improving data, and building a common performance index, GCC countries are setting a strong example of regional cooperation. These steps will help the region address climate challenges and achieve long-term sustainable growth
