In a significant development for the Gulf’s power infrastructure, the GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) have signed a pivotal amendment to their long-term agreement. This event took place at EPRI’s Annual Board of Directors Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, reinforcing a commitment to create a resilient and forward-thinking regional grid.
The revised agreement broadens operational collaboration, equipping GCC member states to embrace advanced grid technologies while incorporating a greater share of renewable energy sources. A multi-year roadmap will direct this collaboration, allowing national authorities to implement results from joint studies into their operations and planning.
This enhanced framework aims to bolster the Gulf’s capacity to manage severe weather, improve energy storage performances, and upgrade protection and power quality systems in the region. Furthermore, it fosters accurate AI-driven load forecasting and readiness in regional control centres, ensuring more effective cross-border electricity exchange.
Additionally, the pact introduces new cooperation avenues, including the development of resource-efficient methodologies, resilience evaluations, and advanced analytics aimed at boosting grid operation. These initiatives align with the GCC’s broader objectives for clean energy while promoting operational reliability and economic efficiency.
This renewed partnership highlights a united vision for power integration in the Gulf, aiming to create a secure, dependable, and sustainable energy landscape through coordinated efforts and global expertise.
