All 25 people who died in the tragic fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa have now been identified by authorities. The victims include 20 staff members and five tourists. Families and friends gathered outside Goa Medical College on Sunday as officials released the names of those who lost their lives in the early-morning blaze. Among the tourists killed, four were from Delhi, three of them belonging to the same family, while the fifth was from Karnataka. The remaining deaths were staff members who came from different states and neighbouring countries, including Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal.
According to police, the fire broke out after midnight on Sunday when a suspected cylinder explosion triggered massive flames inside the nightclub located in Arpora, about 25 kilometres from Panaji. Some eyewitnesses, however, claimed the blaze may have started on the first floor of the club, where many tourists were dancing when smoke first appeared. Panic spread quickly as nearly 100 people were on the dance floor, and many rushed toward the lower floor and kitchen area, where escape routes became blocked, trapping both guests and staff. Authorities confirmed that at least 14 of the victims were workers, while the remaining were tourists and local visitors.
The nightclub, a popular party spot set along the Arpora river backwaters, had a narrow entry and exit point. Because of the tight lanes leading to the venue, fire engines could not reach the building directly and had to stop nearly 400 metres away, making rescue efforts extremely difficult. This delay added to the chaos as flames spread rapidly and thick smoke filled the structure. The severity of the fire and the limited evacuation space turned the location into a deadly trap for many inside.
Officials have released a full list of names of the deceased, confirming victims such as Mohit, Pradeep Mahto, Binod Mahto, Rahul Tanti, Satish Singh, Manojit Mal, Churna Bahadur Pun, Surender Singh, Subhash Chetri, Jitendra Singh, Sumit Negi, Manish Singh, Vivek Katwal, Sabin, Sunil Kumar, Digambar Patir, Rohan Singh, Dominic, Manoj Jora, Sudeep, Ishaq, Saroj Joshi, Vinod Kumar, Anita Joshi and Kamla Joshi. The four Delhi residents and the tourist from Karnataka were confirmed as guests, while the rest worked at the nightclub.
Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the fire and whether safety norms were violated. The tragedy has raised serious questions about emergency preparedness, fire equipment, and crowd management at entertainment venues in Goa. Many visitors and locals expressed shock, saying the popular club was usually crowded on weekends, making the events of that night even more devastating. Rescue teams said they were working through difficult conditions due to smoke, heat and narrow access routes.
This incident has become one of Goa’s deadliest nightclub disasters in recent years, prompting calls for stronger safety protocols. Officials say further updates will be released as forensic teams complete their findings and action is taken against those responsible. The tragic loss of lives has left the community mourning, with families demanding justice and better safety standards to prevent such disasters in the future. The fire has highlighted the urgent need for improved fire safety, stronger emergency access, better crowd control, strict regulatory checks, and faster rescue operations across nightlife venues in the region.
