Greenland has decisively rebuffed any possibility of joining the United States in light of recent annexation threats issued by US President Donald Trump. Instead, it has reiterated its commitment to remaining a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, deeming the US remarks unacceptable and dangerous in the backdrop of current global tensions.
In a joint press conference alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that given a choice, the island would prefer to stay with Denmark. He highlighted that Greenland cherishes its existing political balance and stability over any external pressures.
“We are confronting a geopolitical crisis. If faced with a choice between the United States and Denmark, we unequivocally choose Denmark. We value the Greenland we know today as part of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Nielsen asserted.
These remarks come ahead of a significant meeting in Washington, where Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers are expected to talk with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. The discussions aim to alleviate tensions and mend strained diplomatic relations following Washington’s continued assertions regarding Greenland.
Nielsen characterized the current situation as “very serious,” stating that the Trump administration’s threats of annexation—whether through economic means or military force—are entirely inappropriate.
President Trump reacted sharply when questioned about Greenland’s position, downplaying Nielsen’s statements and indicating they could pose “a big problem” for the Greenlandic leader.
With a population of approximately 57,000, Greenland has historically debated the notion of independence from Denmark. However, the public largely opposes joining the United States. Polling and election outcomes from the prior March revealed that while many favored a gradual approach toward independence, they did not support immediate separation.
When asked if Greenland was pausing its independence aspirations, Nielsen emphasized unity as paramount. “Now is the moment to stand together. Greenland is firmly within the Kingdom of Denmark and is united in defending core principles,” he stated.
European nations are also closely observing these developments. Countries such as the UK and Germany are reportedly strategizing to enhance their military presence in Greenland as a testament to Europe’s commitment to Arctic security.
After consultations with US officials, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed optimism about reaching a compromise, while Defence Minister Boris Pistorius highlighted that Arctic and North Atlantic security must be addressed collaboratively and in adherence to international law.
These events underscore growing global apprehension regarding Greenland’s strategic significance and the escalating tensions within the Arctic region.
