Rising Unrest in Bangladesh Following Hadi's Death: Hasina Remarks

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Violence has surged across Bangladesh following the shooting death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent political activist, renewing fears of unrest. Hadi, involved in the July movement that ousted Sheikh Hasina last year, was shot on December 12 while in a rickshaw in Dhaka, sustaining a devastating head injury.

Despite initial treatment in Bangladesh, he was flown to Singapore for advanced care but passed away on December 18, prompting nationwide protests and unrest.

Events Following Hadi's Death

In the wake of Hadi's murder, violence erupted, targeting several locations:

  • Major newspaper offices were vandalized.

  • Cultural institutions and art centers suffered attacks.

Sheikh Hasina expressed grave concerns about the state of safety in Bangladesh, asserting that the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, is either overwhelmed or indifferent to the rising chaos.

Hasina's Urgent Warnings

The former Prime Minister criticized the escalating violence as detrimental not only to the nation but also to relationships with neighboring countries, stating that religious minorities are increasingly vulnerable and that extremist factions are gaining ground.

She cautioned that unchecked violence could destabilize the entire South Asian region.

Violence Against Minorities and Political Tension

Reports of anti-India sentiments have surfaced, including a tragic incident where a Hindu man was killed and burned on a highway due to alleged blasphemous remarks. Police later refuted claims that the deceased had provoked the mob.

Due to security fears, the Indian Visa Application Centre in Chittagong temporarily suspended all services.

Moreover, Sheikh Hasina condemned a court ruling against her as politically motivated, emphasizing the importance of her party's participation in future elections.

She added that her departure from Bangladesh intended to prevent bloodshed, vowing to return only when a fair government and judicial system are in place.

Significance of the Situation

The ongoing violence in Bangladesh raises serious alarms, as citizens feel threatened, political strife intensifies, and the prospect of peace remains tenuous. This developing situation is drawing international scrutiny.
