Rockstar Games officially opened pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) on June 25 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game is priced at $80 for the Base Edition, while the Ultimate Edition costs $100.
Although players can now reserve their copies, Rockstar has not released any public gameplay footage. So far, the company has only shared two cinematic trailers, meaning customers are being asked to pre-order the game without seeing actual gameplay.
Rockstar Relies on GTA's Long-Standing Reputation
Rockstar Games has described GTA 6 as "the largest game launch in history." While the title has generated enormous excitement, major game releases typically include gameplay demonstrations before pre-orders begin.
The $80 starting price places GTA 6 above the current $70 AAA game standard. Earlier this year, Nintendo raised prices with Mario Kart World, and Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has now set an even higher entry price for its biggest franchise.
Industry analysts believe Rockstar has the flexibility to do so because of the popularity of the GTA series. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said Take-Two can do "just about anything" when it comes to pricing this particular franchise.
Players Are Being Asked to Trust the Franchise
The Grand Theft Auto series has built strong trust among players over the years. GTA V, released in 2013, has generated well over $8 billion in lifetime revenue, while GTA Online has remained a major source of income for more than a decade.
Many players believe a GTA title offers hundreds of hours of gameplay, making it worth the investment. However, with no gameplay footage available, buyers currently have to base their decision on the two trailers, the announced September 26 release date, and Rockstar's reputation.

Higher Price Could Affect Some Players
The higher launch price has also raised concerns about affordability.
Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott said a higher price floor "hits exactly the players already feeling the squeeze." He also noted that GTA Online remains Take-Two's biggest long-term revenue source, and a higher entry price could reduce the number of players joining the game at launch, limiting the audience that later supports microtransaction revenue.
GTA 6 Launches Only on Consoles
At launch, GTA 6 will be available exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar has not confirmed a release date for the PC version, meaning PC players may need to wait longer. Those without a current-generation console may also face the added expense of purchasing new hardware before buying the $80 game.
Players who pre-order through the PlayStation Store can also receive a one-month GTA+ subscription.
Fans Continue Waiting for Trailer 3
Many fans expected Rockstar to release a third trailer, including gameplay footage, alongside the opening of pre-orders. That did not happen.
There is currently no confirmed release date for Trailer 3, and Rockstar has not announced when gameplay footage will be shown.
With the game's release now around three months away, the lack of gameplay footage is unusual for a title of this scale, as many major games typically showcase extended gameplay between six and twelve months before launch.
Take-Two's Long-Term Strategy
Chris Dring of The Game Business said players generally trust that a GTA game provides long-term value, and that confidence has been built over many years. However, Rockstar is asking fans to extend that trust further by accepting both a higher launch price and the absence of gameplay footage before purchase.
The $80 Base Edition serves as the entry point, while the $100 Ultimate Edition offers a more expensive option. Placeholder listings from some European retailers had briefly shown even higher prices, but those figures were later withdrawn as unconfirmed.
With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on September 26, attention is now focused on whether Rockstar will release gameplay footage in the coming weeks before the game's highly anticipated debut.
