South Africa Defeat Pakistan in First T20 by 55 Runs

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

South Africa began their T20 series against Pakistan with a strong 55-run victory in the first match held in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. The visitors put in a complete performance with both bat and ball, setting a competitive total and then defending it with confidence. This win gave South Africa an early lead in the three-match series and boosted their morale for the upcoming games in Lahore.

Opener Reeza Hendricks led South Africa’s charge with a superb innings of 60 runs off just 40 balls, providing the foundation for their total of 194 for nine. He played with fine timing and placement, mixing aggression with patience. His opening partner, Quinton de Kock, added quick runs at the top, scoring 23 from 13 balls before being dismissed. Their partnership gave South Africa early control and momentum.

After the openers set the tone, debutant Tony de Zorzi impressed in his first T20 international match with a lively 33 from 16 balls, hitting some elegant strokes. All-rounder George Linde also contributed a valuable 36 from 22 deliveries, keeping the scoreboard moving during the middle overs. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the South African batters maintained their attacking intent until the end of the innings.

For Pakistan, Mohammad Nawaz was the standout bowler, delivering an excellent spell of 3 for 26 in four overs. His left-arm spin slowed South Africa’s scoring rate during the middle overs, but the rest of the attack struggled for consistency. Pakistan’s bowlers were expensive at times, allowing South Africa to post a challenging total close to the 200-run mark.

In reply, Pakistan failed to chase down the target as South African seamer Corbin Bosch produced a career-best performance. He took 4 wickets for 14 runs in his four overs, destroying Pakistan’s batting lineup and ensuring that South Africa stayed well ahead in the match. His accurate line and pace variations made him difficult to play, and his wickets came at crucial moments in the innings.

Pakistan’s batting lineup was under pressure right from the start. Opener Saim Ayub scored 37 from 28 balls, trying to anchor the innings, but he received little support from the rest of the team. Captain Babar Azam, returning to T20 internationals after nearly a year, was dismissed for a two-ball duck, caught at cover by Hendricks off Bosch. That early blow left Pakistan reeling and unable to recover fully.

Although South African spinner George Linde was expensive in his first spell, he bounced back effectively to claim 3 wickets for 31 runs. His performance, combined with Bosch’s deadly bowling, ensured that Pakistan were bowled out for 139 runs. The visitors maintained tight fielding and bowling discipline throughout the innings, never allowing Pakistan to gain momentum or form strong partnerships.

With this victory, South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The team’s balanced performance with both bat and ball showed their growing confidence and adaptability in different conditions. The second T20 will be played in Lahore on Friday, followed by the final match at the same venue on Saturday. Pakistan will now look to bounce back strongly, while South Africa will aim to maintain their dominance and secure the series win early.

The first T20 match demonstrated South Africa’s depth and all-round strength. With Hendricks providing consistency at the top, Bosch delivering breakthroughs with the ball, and contributions from multiple players, the team appears well-prepared for the remaining matches. If they continue their disciplined approach, South Africa could end the series with a memorable triumph on Pakistani soil.
