Hims and Hers Expands Weight-Loss Services in the UK with New Membership Plans

Hims and Hers Expands Weight-Loss Services in the UK with New Membership Plans

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Hims and Hers Health, a leading telehealth company, has announced its entry into the weight-loss market in the United Kingdom. This expansion is significant as it taps into a growing demand for medical weight-loss solutions. Previously, the company's offerings in the UK were largely centered around sexual health, skincare, and hair-loss treatments for men. With the introduction of this new service, Hims and Hers aims to cater to a broader audience seeking safe and medically supervised weight-loss options.

The UK initiative will feature prominent medications such as Wegovy by Novo Nordisk and Mounjaro from Eli Lilly. These treatments are well-regarded worldwide for their efficacy in weight management by controlling appetite and enhancing the body's sugar regulation. Additionally, Hims and Hers will provide Orlos, an economical over-the-counter choice featuring orlistat.

The membership for weight-loss services begins at 149 pounds per month for those who commit to a year-long plan, mirroring the subscription model already in place in the United States. Patients will undergo a thorough clinical assessment, and if eligible, will receive tailored prescriptions along with consistent follow-up healthcare support, ensuring safe and effective usage of the medications.

This year, Hims and Hers solidified its European presence through the acquisition of Zava, a telehealth firm based in London that prescribes and distributes weight-loss drugs across the UK, Germany, France, and Ireland. This purchase facilitates Hims' provision of its successful US model of online healthcare to European clients.

One factor boosting projected demand in the UK is the pricing advantage. Medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro are significantly cheaper in the UK compared to the US. For instance, UK online pharmacies offer these medications for 109 to 149 pounds per month, while American pharmacies list them at roughly $199 to $449 per month. Even with recent price adjustments by Eli Lilly for Zepbound, UK prices remain favorable compared to their US counterparts.

Nonetheless, access to these medications via the UK's National Health Service (NHS) is limited due to high demand, pricing, and supply constraints, propelling many individuals towards private solutions. With its online framework and competitive pricing, Hims and Hers aspires to simplify access to weight-loss medications for those unable to obtain them through the NHS.

The company emphasizes its focus on safety, clinical oversight, and patient comfort in the UK model. After completing an online assessment, patients can have their medications delivered to their homes along with ongoing support for managing side effects, adjusting dosages, and tracking progress. This approach aims to blend medical oversight with the ease of telehealth services.

The introduction of weight-loss treatments in the UK underscores the rapid expansion of the weight-loss drug market globally. As more individuals seek medical intervention to address obesity, companies like Hims and Hers are rushing to provide easier access to reputable drugs.

For now, Hims and Hers believes its subscription approach, coupled with clinical support and lower pricing in the UK, will draw thousands of new customers. As global demand for weight-loss medications continues to increase, Hims and Hers is positioning itself as a formidable player in this flourishing market.
