Located in the northeast of Makkah, Al-Saqqaf Palace is a famous landmark that tells the story of the Holy City and the Saudi state. Built around 1880, it is one of Makkah’s most important historic buildings and has long been a symbol of the city’s rich heritage.
Role In Administration And Politics
Originally, the palace was used for administrative work. It hosted many important meetings with influential social figures of the time. Al-Saqqaf Palace also became a key place for managing state affairs and receiving official delegations and honored guests. Several important agreements and decisions during the early years of the Third Saudi State were signed at the palace, making it significant in the nation’s political history.
Decline And Continued Importance
The use of the palace declined between 1980 and 2019 because official offices moved to modern buildings. However, the palace has remained an important symbol of Makkah’s history and culture. Its presence near the Grand Mosque has made it a welcoming point for visitors and delegations arriving in the city.
Architectural Significance
Dr. Omar Adnan, head of the Department of Architecture at Umm Al-Qura University, explains that the palace’s architecture shows the traditional Makkah style, combining simplicity with elegance. Local stone was used for the strong foundations, and wood for windows and doors was imported from India and East Africa. This reflects Makkah’s historic trade and cultural connections across the Islamic world.
Restoration And Cultural Efforts
To protect this important landmark, the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites has started several restoration and rehabilitation projects. These efforts aim to preserve the palace’s historical and cultural significance. The palace is also being transformed into a lively venue for cultural events, celebrating Makkah’s architectural, social, and cultural heritage for both residents and visitors.
