In a thrilling Game 3 of the NHL Eastern Conference Final, the Carolina Hurricanes edged the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in overtime, taking a 2-1 series lead. Andrei Svechnikov played hero with the winning goal at 14:06 of overtime, marking Carolina's second consecutive overtime triumph over Montreal.
The clash unfolded at the Bell Centre in Montreal, where an intense and competitive atmosphere set the stage from the start. Carolina's early dominance saw Shayne Gostisbehere score first, capitalizing on a rebound to fire the puck home.
However, the Canadiens quickly retaliated. Mike Matheson netted the equalizer after receiving a setup from rookie Ivan Demidov, briefly lifting the spirits of the home fans. Yet, the Hurricanes responded swiftly, with Taylor Hall scoring from his own rebound to restore a 2-1 lead before the first intermission.
The second period saw Lane Hutson level the affair for Montreal during a power play, finishing a slick passing combination with Cole Caufield. This goal snapped Carolina’s impressive streak of successful penalty kills during these playoffs.
Both teams battled fiercely in the third period, generating opportunities but struggling to convert. A potential Montreal lead was overturned when Noah Dobson's goal was disallowed due to an offside challenge by Carolina, keeping the score tied heading to overtime.
In the overtime frame, Carolina maintained offensive dominance, and Svechnikov ultimately clinched the game with a wrist shot that slipped past Montreal's Jakub Dobes. Initially credited to Sebastian Aho, the goal was reassigned to Svechnikov after a review.
Hurricanes' goaltender Frederik Andersen made 11 saves, while Canadiens’ Jakub Dobes showcased his skills with 35 saves in a valiant effort. Carolina's commanding offensive presence, especially in overtime, positioned them as serious contenders in this playoff series.
With this victory, the Hurricanes improved their playoff record to 10-1 following an initial loss in the Eastern Conference Final. They’ve now won five overtime games, reflecting their resilience following a tough 6-2 defeat in Game 1.
The Canadiens faced their first consecutive playoff losses this postseason but remained supported by their fans. Head Coach Martin St. Louis emphasized the need for improved execution as the series shifts to Game 4 in Montreal, where the Canadiens aim to even the score before heading back to Carolina. Analysts regard the series as highly competitive, with Carolina’s recent success in overtime providing them with crucial psychological momentum.
