Abu Dhabi to Host 11th Judo Grand Slam with 14 Weight Categories

The International Judo Federation (IJF) has officially approved 14 weight categories for the upcoming 11th Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, one of the world’s top Judo tournaments. The event, held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain Region, will take place from November 27 to 30 at Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi.

A Pathway to the 2028 Olympic Games

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam is a qualifying event for the 2028 Olympic Games, making it a crucial tournament on the international Judo calendar. Athletes from across the globe will compete for valuable ranking points that could determine their qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics. The event is expected to attract elite judokas, coaches, and officials from several national federations.

Full List of Approved Weight Categories

According to the IJF’s announcement, the competition will include a total of 14 weight divisions — seven for men and seven for women.

  • Women’s Lightweight: Under 48kg, 52kg, and 57kg.

  • Men’s Lightweight: Under 60kg and 66kg.

  • Women’s Light Middleweight: Under 63kg and 70kg.

  • Men’s Light Middleweight: Under 73kg and 81kg.

  • Women’s Heavyweight: Under 78kg and over 78kg.

  • Men’s Heavyweight: Under 90kg, over 90kg, under 100kg, and over 100kg.

This diverse range of categories ensures fair and exciting competition across all weight classes, showcasing the best of global Judo talent.

Mubadala Arena Set to Host Global Stars

The Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi has become a well-known venue for hosting major martial arts and sporting events. The federation also emphasized the importance of the event as a celebration of sportsmanship, unity, and friendship, values that form the foundation of Judo as a discipline and a way of life.

The UAE Judo Federation described the Grand Slam as “an exceptional celebration of skill, discipline, and the true spirit of Judo.” Officials highlighted that beyond medals and rankings, the event will serve as a platform to build friendships and foster international cooperation through sport. The Federation added, “Let us unite to honour the camaraderie and unity that Judo represents and strengthen the global Judo community.”
