Riau Islands Ramp Up Immigration Checks for Foreign Workers

Post by : Shakul

In a significant enforcement initiative, Indonesian authorities have stepped up their operations in the Riau Islands, resulting in the detention of several foreign nationals for allegedly lacking proper work permits in Batam’s industrial and construction sectors.

Officials from the Batam Immigration Office reported detaining six foreigners—five from China and one from Malaysia—during operations held between March and April 10, with heightened scrutiny as the main goal.

The enforcement focused on foreign workers suspected of violating their visa terms by engaging in unauthorized employment.

Preliminary investigations revealed that two Chinese nationals were found employed in an industrial area despite having only limited stay permits, which do not permit legal work.

Subsequent inspections in early April led to the apprehension of three more Chinese nationals at a construction site, where they were allegedly involved in technical tasks while holding B211 visit visas that usually allow only for business visits.

In a different operation, immigration officials in Ranai deported two Malaysian nationals who were engaged in ship repair activities without the necessary work permits.

The authorities confirmed that these enforcement actions are part of a broader effort to ensure compliance with immigration laws and to curb the misuse of visa regulations within significant economic areas.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict oversight of foreign labor to safeguard local employment standards and uphold legal practices.
