Gunman Neutralized at White House Security Checkpoint

Post by : Shweta

A gunman was shot and killed by Secret Service agents following gunfire exchanged at a security checkpoint near the White House in Washington, DC. The altercation took place on Saturday evening at the busy intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, notorious for its stringent security measures. Authorities indicated that the suspect approached the checkpoint with a bag, drew a weapon, and began firing at the stationed officers.

Secret Service personnel reacted swiftly to the assault, returning fire immediately. The attacker sustained severe injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Reports confirmed that a bystander was injured during the event, and investigators are examining whether the injuries were inflicted by the gunman or during the officers' return fire. Fortunately, no agents from the Secret Service were hurt during the incident.

Law enforcement identified the deceased as 21-year-old Nasire Best from Maryland, who was previously known to security for prior incidents near the White House. Court documents revealed that he had attempted unauthorized entry at another checkpoint in 2025 and had a history of mental health struggles that mandated him to avoid the White House vicinity.

The gunfire sparked immediate chaos in the vicinity of the White House, prompting a temporary lockdown of streets and nearby government buildings. Staff and journalists were advised to stay indoors as heavily armed officers secured the area. Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots as emergency responders and police rushed to the scene.

President Donald Trump was in the White House during the shooting but was unscathed. Trump commended the Secret Service for their prompt action and acknowledged their role in safeguarding the presidential residence. A thorough investigation into the suspect’s background, motives, and actions leading up to the shooting is now underway by federal entities, including the FBI and Secret Service.

This incident has reignited discussions regarding security threats surrounding the White House and the rising levels of political violence across the US, marking the third shooting-related incident near President Trump in just a few weeks. Security analysts anticipate that this event may prompt stricter security protocols around governmental buildings and public spaces in Washington, DC. Authorities urge calm among the public while investigations are ongoing.
