India entered Day 3 of the first Test in Ahmedabad in full control after declaring their innings at 448/5. The declaration came before the start of play, with Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten on 104 and Washington Sundar on 9. Their solid batting performance placed India 286 runs ahead of the West Indies, giving the home team a commanding advantage.
West Indies Lose Early Wickets
The West Indies began their second innings under immense pressure and quickly stumbled. Both openers, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and John Campbell, departed cheaply with just 24 runs on the board. India’s bowlers made use of the conditions effectively, tightening their grip on the match and leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb.
Centuries Shine for India
India’s innings was built on several outstanding batting performances. Dhruv Jurel and KL Rahul both scored centuries on Friday, showing maturity and strong technique against the West Indies attack. Their efforts not only pushed India past the visitors’ first innings score but also provided a strong foundation for the lower middle order to build upon.
Gill Falls to Reverse Sweep
Shubman Gill, who looked well set, played a rash shot that cost him his wicket. He attempted a reverse sweep against Roston Chase but only managed to throw away his wicket. This dismissal came right after India had crossed the West Indies’ total, halting what could have been another big innings from the young batter.
India’s First Day Position
On the first day of the Test, India ended their innings at 121/2, still trailing by 41 runs at the time. Despite the early challenges, the team remained calm and focused. With rain briefly interrupting play for 22 minutes, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal adjusted his approach after the break. He struck a quick 36 before edging a delivery from Jayden Seales to the wicketkeeper.
Sudharsan’s Brief Stay at the Crease
Sai Sudharsan’s time at the crease was short-lived. He misjudged the length of a delivery, attempting a pull shot to a good-length ball. The miscalculation led to him being trapped lbw, cutting short his contribution to India’s innings. Despite these minor setbacks, the other batters ensured India stayed firmly in control.
West Indies Struggle in First Innings
The problems for the West Indies began much earlier in the match. Skipper Roston Chase had opted to bat first after winning the toss, but the decision did not work in their favour. The Indian fast bowlers made the most of the humid conditions, with Mohammed Siraj picking up four wickets and Jasprit Bumrah claiming three. The visitors were bowled out for just 162 runs, with Justin Greaves being the top scorer at 32.
India’s Bowlers Deliver with Swing and Seam
The Ahmedabad pitch offered movement early in the match, and India’s pacers exploited it well. Both Siraj and Bumrah bowled tight lines, creating pressure on the West Indies’ top and middle order. The seam movement off the surface made life difficult for the visitors, who never looked settled. This early collapse set the stage for India’s dominance in the Test.
Jadeja’s Classy Century
One of the biggest highlights for India was Ravindra Jadeja’s century. Coming in after solid performances from the top order, Jadeja held his end firmly and guided the team past 400. His knock displayed patience, technique, and composure, underlining his value as an all-rounder. Jadeja’s ability to build partnerships and maintain control was key to India’s declaration strategy.
India Eyeing Control of the Test
With a big lead in hand and the West Indies already two wickets down in their second innings, India are firmly in command of the first Test. The visitors will need an extraordinary batting effort to avoid defeat, while India will look to maintain pressure with their experienced bowling attack. If momentum continues in this direction, India could wrap up the game well before the final day.
