Significant Natural Gas Discovery Near Malampaya Boosts Philippines' Energy Landscape

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A significant development for the Philippines' energy independence was announced by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday, revealing the discovery of natural gas at Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1), situated approximately 6 kilometres east of the established Malampaya gas field near Palawan.

Local media has described this as the country's first notable natural gas find in over a decade.

The newly identified well is projected to contain about 98 billion cubic feet of natural gas, capable of producing approximately 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. This volume of energy is sufficient to power around 5.7 million homes or 200,000 schools on an annual basis.

This discovery forms part of an $893 million drilling initiative spearheaded by Prime Energy, owned by Filipino entrepreneur Enrique Razon. Initial evaluations at the site revealed gas output of roughly 60 million cubic feet per day, showcasing strong production viability.

The find at MAE-1 is anticipated to prolong the operational lifespan of the Malampaya gas field, which currently meets 35 to 40 percent of Luzon’s electricity demands. Furthermore, this development will assist the nation in decreasing its reliance on coal imports, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable energy framework.

The drilling site is located in the West Philippine Sea, a region crucial to the nation’s energy development strategies.
