Indonesia Faces Challenges as Solar Demand Soars

Post by : Shakul

Amid rising global energy tensions, Indonesia is experiencing a notable increase in solar energy demand as businesses and consumers seek alternatives to oil and gas shortages. Unfortunately, the existing grid infrastructure is unable to effectively accommodate this rising interest in renewable solutions.

Experts have indicated that while requests for rooftop solar installations are on the rise, many of these initiatives are being hampered by the limitations of the current national electricity grid, run by PLN, which struggles to integrate substantial amounts of distributed solar energy.

According to Norman Bakhtiar, his company has noted a marked uptick in solar project inquiries since the escalation of global energy issues this year. This renewed interest signifies a shift in corporate strategies toward more secure energy options.

Many businesses are now considering off-grid solar solutions, which provide the benefit of energy independence but come with enhanced costs due to the requirement for battery storage systems to ensure uninterrupted power availability.

Experts clarify that off-grid solar setups can be costly because solar panels are unable to produce electricity after sunset, necessitating energy storage solutions, which elevate the overall expenditure for both installation and maintenance.

Despite these obstacles, the burgeoning interest in solar energy signals a significant shift towards sustainable solutions in Indonesia. The ongoing energy crisis has revealed the risks associated with heavy reliance on fossil fuels and imported energy sources.

However, without substantial investment in upgrading the grid and enhancing infrastructure, Indonesia may find it challenging to fully leverage the increasing demand for renewable energy. Strengthening the grid is vital for supporting long-term energy transition initiatives and ensuring a reliable, sustainable power supply.
