Taiwan is expressing anxiety over what it perceives as "unusual" alterations in the leadership of China’s military. This comes after the country disclosed that two major generals are under scrutiny. Defence Minister Wellington Koo stated on Monday that Taiwan will monitor the situation closely and apply various strategies to gauge Beijing’s motives amid this rare internal review.
On Saturday, China announced that Zhang Youxia, the vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and President Xi Jinping's second-in-command in the military hierarchy, is under investigation for suspected serious breaches of discipline and law. Liu Zhenli, another high-ranking military official, is also facing similar scrutiny.
Such public investigations concerning high-ranking military figures are relatively uncommon in the context of China’s political and military environment. This development may indicate potential internal strife within the People’s Liberation Army or Xi Jinping's efforts to reinforce control over the armed forces at a crucial geopolitical juncture.
Taiwan’s Defence Ministry underscored the importance of a thorough analysis of these occurrences, as any disruptions or shifts in China’s military power could pose significant threats to regional stability. Due to its geographic proximity and ongoing security issues concerning China, Taiwan remains alert to any changes that could influence peace in the Taiwan Strait.
The investigation of Zhang Youxia, a pivotal figure allied with President Xi, indicates that China’s leadership may be addressing problems related to discipline or loyalty among its upper echelons. This could symbolize broader attempts to centralize power and ensure military backing for the government’s strategic objectives.
International observers are vigilantly tracking these internal probes, noting that they occur during a period of heightened global scrutiny on China and while Taiwan enhances its defense capabilities.
This evolving scenario complicates the landscape of cross-strait relations and raises significant queries regarding the stability and future of China’s military hierarchy.
