In a significant turn of events for the much-anticipated Vijay film, Jana Nayagan, the Madras High Court ruled on Tuesday to revoke a prior order that instructed the Censor Board to issue a certificate for the movie. This decision has effectively postponed its theatrical debut.
The court emphasized that the single judge had not provided the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) sufficient time to respond, thus halting the film's screening until it obtains official approval from the CBFC.
A new hearing regarding the censor certificate is anticipated at the Madras High Court shortly. Previously, the court had reserved its judgment on January 20 and was set to deliver the verdict on January 27 (today).
Marketed as Vijay’s final movie prior to dedicating himself fully to politics, Jana Nayagan was originally slated for release on January 9, just ahead of the Pongal festival. Yet, just days before its premiere, the Censor Board referred the film to a revising committee due to a complaint.
The film’s producers, KVN Productions, turned to the Madras High Court for intervention, which initially mandated the Censor Board to issue a UA certificate contingent upon necessary modifications. However, the board contested this decision, leading a two-judge panel at the High Court to stay the earlier ruling and delay proceedings until January 21, post-Pongal.
In the wake of this, KVN Productions sought immediate recourse from the Supreme Court, which deliberated on the issue on January 15 but ultimately dismissed the petition, returning the matter to the Madras High Court for further adjudication.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the film's arrival, but with final clearance from the Censor Board still outstanding, the launch remains uncertain.
