Strong backlash is brewing against the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) following the controversial reinstatement of an official, igniting frustration among national team players. This decision comes on the heels of Bangladesh's absence from the upcoming T20 World Cup.
M. Najmul Islam has returned as the head of the finance department just days after being dismissed from his role, prompting disappointment from players who feel their grievances have been overlooked.
One senior player, who chose to remain anonymous, sarcastically remarked on the board’s seemingly arbitrary decision-making process, voicing a larger sentiment among players that their concerns are being disregarded.
Previously removed on January 18 due to player protests against his insensitive comments, Najmul's reinstatement brings renewed unease. His earlier criticisms of the ICC's decision to exclude Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup have further exacerbated tensions within the team.
Najmul had controversially stated that the players wouldn't receive compensation if the team opted out of the tournament. He also suggested they had not earned public support due to their lack of significant victories in ICC events, escalating tensions with players and cricket organizations.
The Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) condemned his remarks, advocating for his removal. Although Najmul faced temporary suspension after criticism, his reinstatement has reopened old wounds.
He also stirred controversy with remarks about former captain Tamim Iqbal, labeling him an 'agent of India' after Tamim advocated for reasoned dialogue regarding Bangladesh's relationship with India. This statement has been widely condemned as detrimental to team cohesion.
Current Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto emphasized the need for a rational approach, ensuring that players are under heightened mental strain amidst ongoing internal disputes.
The recurring disputes within the BCB raise critical concerns about its leadership. With Bangladesh cricket in dire need of stability and transparency, recent actions by the board seem to widen rifts rather than foster healing.
Without careful management, this situation could negatively impact player morale, public trust, and the future development of cricket in Bangladesh.
