Iraqi Elections: Campaign Silence Enforced Ahead of Polls

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Iraq has officially entered into a period of electoral silence preceding the parliamentary elections set for Sunday, marking a crucial cessation of political activities.

As of Saturday morning, all political parties and candidates are prohibited from campaigning, creating a tranquil environment for voters to contemplate their choices ahead of the ballots. The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has confirmed that special voting will commence at 7:00 AM, accommodating over 1.3 million voters, including 26,538 displaced individuals.

This silence aims to establish a neutral atmosphere, devoid of last-minute promotional tactics or political pressure. Officials have made it clear that any violations, such as actively endorsing candidates during this time, will lead to severe legal repercussions.

Analysts emphasize that these protocols are vital for upholding fairness within Iraq’s intricate political environment, enabling citizens to deliberate their choices without external influences. For many, this quiet period offers a valuable chance to concentrate solely on their voting preferences, amidst the often charged political discourse.

As the election day approaches, Iraqis are gearing up to engage in what is regarded as a significant vote for the nation's trajectory, highlighting the necessity of adherence and public vigilance during this final phase of silence.
