Japan’s factory production dropped by 0.9% in April compared to the previous month. This was the first time in three months that the output went down. The main reason for this drop was less manufacturing of equipment used for flat-panel displays, according to government data released on Friday.
The government’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said the seasonally adjusted production index for factories and mines was 101.5 in April. This number is based on the year 2020, which is set at 100. In March, the index had increased slightly by 0.2%, but this was higher than the first reported number.
News agency Kyodo reported that the March data was changed from an earlier estimate of a 1.1% decrease to a small increase. This change happened because pharmaceutical product output was higher than first counted, which helped the total numbers go up.
So, while April saw a small drop in production mainly because of less equipment for displays, March actually did better than first thought, thanks to more medicines being made.
