Today, Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido experienced a strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). Occurring at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers, the quake was felt across various areas in the region. So far, no casualties or significant damage have been reported.
Japan lies in one of the globe's most seismically active zones and frequently encounters earthquakes due to its position near major tectonic plate boundaries. With the world's most extensive seismic network, the country can monitor even minor earthquakes, ensuring rapid alerts and disaster preparedness.
On the same day, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake was registered along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border, confirmed by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). This earthquake, occurring at 10:14 a.m. IST and also at a depth of 10 kilometers, poses a risk of aftershocks. The NCS shared details on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “EQ of M: 3.7, On: 24/10/2025 10:14:26 IST, Lat: 36.64 N, Long: 72.77 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan.” Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or damage in this area either.
This week has seen additional seismic activity, including a 4.3 magnitude quake that rattled parts of Afghanistan, while Tibet has recently felt several tremors, one at 3.6 and another at 4.0 magnitude. The Tibetan Plateau frequently experiences seismic events due to tectonic plate collisions, evident from the significant earthquakes in 2008, which ranged from 5.9 to 7.1 in magnitude.
Experts indicate that shallow earthquakes pose a greater risk since their seismic waves reach the surface promptly, resulting in stronger ground shaking. This can cause more destruction despite lower magnitudes. The World Bank has noted that the August 31 earthquake in Afghanistan alone inflicted an estimated $183 million in damage.
The recent seismic activities in Japan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tibet highlight the ongoing vulnerability of many Asian regions to earthquakes. As tectonic plates shift, experts stress the need for preparedness, infrastructure resilience, and real-time monitoring to mitigate future risks.
While today’s quake has not resulted in major casualties, the various tremors across Asia serve as a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the essential need for vigilance in earthquake-prone areas.
