In a shocking daylight heist, the world-famous Louvre Museum in Paris was robbed of jewels valued at €88 million. The stolen items include historic pieces once owned by Napoleon and his family, causing national concern over the loss of irreplaceable cultural heritage.
Museum officials confirmed that the thieves took a diamond and emerald necklace gifted by Emperor Napoleon, a tiara worn by Empress Eugenie, and several pieces belonging to Queen Marie-Amelie. Experts emphasised that the historical significance of these items far exceeds their monetary value.
The robbery lasted less than eight minutes and occurred shortly after the museum opened on Sunday. Four masked thieves arrived in a truck with a mechanical lift, accessing the Galerie d'Apollon through a balcony overlooking the River Seine. Two used battery-powered cutters to break a first-floor glass window, forcing guards to evacuate.
In their haste, the thieves dropped a crown belonging to Empress Eugenie, providing authorities with the first clue. They attempted to destroy evidence by setting their vehicle on fire, but museum staff prevented further loss. Eyewitnesses saw the gang fleeing on scooters, showing the careful planning and precision behind the crime.
The incident has raised questions about museum security. Preliminary reports revealed that one in three rooms lacked CCTV coverage and the alarm system failed to trigger. Authorities suspect that the thieves were experienced professionals capable of executing a fast and coordinated operation.
Experts warn that the stolen jewels could quickly vanish from the market, possibly broken into smaller items to avoid detection. French authorities are under pressure to track down the pieces before they disappear entirely, while security measures at cultural institutions nationwide have been intensified.
French President Emmanuel Macron called the robbery an attack on France’s heritage, highlighting the cultural as well as financial loss. The theft has shocked citizens and experts alike, drawing attention to the vulnerability of even the most prestigious museums.
Police continue to investigate the heist, examining surveillance footage, witness accounts, and security reports. Authorities are coordinating with international agencies in case the jewels are transported abroad, as the operation may have been carried out by highly skilled criminals with experience in art and jewelry theft.
