Jyothi Yarraji Shatters Records with Gold at Asian Championships

Post by : Meena Hassan

Indian athlete Jyothi Yarraji has once again made the nation proud. She achieved gold in the women’s 100m hurdles during the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships held in Gumi, South Korea, on May 29, 2025. This victory stands as a remarkable milestone in Indian athletics.

Jyothi completed her run in 12.96 seconds, setting a new championship record. Notably, she became the first Indian woman to finish the 100m hurdles in under 13 seconds, marking a significant achievement for India.

An Unprecedented Race

This historic win occurred under unique circumstances, as heavy rainfall forced spectators to evacuate the stadium for safety. Consequently, Jyothi Yarraji ran the decisive race in an empty venue.

Without cheers or audience applause, she maintained her composure. Post-race, Jyothi recounted the unusual feeling of crossing the finish line alone, emphasizing that it was the first time in many years she felt compelled to celebrate audibly.

Race Dynamics

Initially, Jyothi fell slightly behind her competitors but surged ahead after the eighth hurdle. Her speed and agility allowed her to surpass athletes from Japan and China, finishing strongly.

Final Standings:

  • Gold: Jyothi Yarraji (India) – 12.96 seconds

  • Silver: Yumi Tanaka (Japan) – 13.04 seconds

  • Bronze: Yanni Wu (China) – 13.12 seconds

Strategic Change in Technique

This season, Jyothi reverted to the eight-step technique between hurdles. After a challenging experience with the seven-step approach at the Olympics in Paris, this decision proved fruitful.

Her coach, James Hillier, praised her adherence to the race strategy, noting that Jyothi is now more powerful, fit, and confident. This adjustment has also played a crucial role in preventing injuries.

From Humble Beginnings to Great Heights

Hailing from Pombaram village near Visakhapatnam, Jyothi's path to success has been filled with challenges. Initially a long jumper, she transitioned to hurdles in 2017, facing numerous obstacles early in her career.

She often relied on borrowed equipment and faced financial struggles. Eventually, training support in Hyderabad allowed her to flourish as an athlete.

Achievements Amidst Challenges

Jyothi Yarraji's career has featured both victories and trials:

  • 2023: Secured Asian gold in Bangkok under heavy rain

  • 2024: Achieved a national record but faced difficulties at the Olympics

  • Early 2025: Earned 200m gold at National Games

  • May 2025: Defended Asian title with record performance

Despite a hamstring injury in April 2025, she persevered to achieve a remarkable comeback.

Looking Ahead for Jyothi Yarraji

Following this gold medal, Jyothi is now targeting the 2026 World Championships in Tokyo. To qualify, she aims to clock a time of 12.73 seconds. Analysts anticipate she will reach this benchmark soon.

Sports officials commend her performance, recognizing her as a beacon of hard work and dedication. Enhanced support from sports programs has played a significant role in improving her training and resources.

Celebration on Social Media

Videos showcasing Jyothi Yarraji receiving her medal in an empty stadium have gone viral, with many in India appreciating her bravery and skill. The absence of a live audience during such a pivotal moment has evoked mixed emotions.

Standing at 1.78 meters tall, Jyothi Yarraji serves as an inspiration, especially for young girls from rural areas. Her journey embodies the potential of dreams realized through hard work, the right guidance, and strong belief.
