Kevin Vermaerke delivered an impressive performance on the opening stage of the Tour of Austria, claiming second place for UAE Team Emirates-XRG after a hard-fought race in Gamlitz.
The American rider crossed the finish line just 11 seconds behind stage winner Gregor Mühlberger of Austria. The result also placed Vermaerke second in the overall standings after the first stage.
The race began in Graz, where a large breakaway group quickly built an advantage over the main field.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG worked closely with Netcompany Ineos to reduce the gap during the final 50 kilometres. Their combined effort helped bring the breakaway under control and created the opportunity for their team leaders to compete for the stage victory.
The race became more aggressive during the final 30 kilometres as the leading group split apart and the battle for victory intensified.
Gregor Mühlberger launched the race-winning attack with just over 11 kilometres remaining. While the riders behind hesitated, the Austrian extended his advantage and maintained his lead all the way to the finish on home roads.
Vermaerke continued to chase and remained among the leading contenders. Although he was unable to catch Mühlberger, he won the sprint for second place and finished only 11 seconds behind the stage winner.
The strong opening performance gives UAE Team Emirates-XRG confidence as the Tour of Austria continues. With Vermaerke sitting second overall, the team will have more chances in the coming stages to compete for stage victories.
Speaking after the race, Vermaerke praised his teammates for their efforts throughout the stage. "It was a big, punchy stage to start the race. We knew the last 30km would be pretty key, and in the end the breakaway had a pretty big gap in the last 50km. Our guys did a really good job of closing it in the last 50km, with the help of Ineos – nobody else wanted to contribute."
He also reflected on the decisive moment that shaped the race. "It was a really strong ride from us. In the last part, I just followed the moves and tried to be present, and I found myself with pretty good timing. I hesitated a bit when Mühlberger went, and in hindsight, I should have gone with him. But in the end, I won the sprint for second, and we'll look forward to the next days to try and do one better!"
