Kim Jong Un Monitors Submarine Development and Missile Testing

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has taken a direct role in observing the building of a new nuclear-powered submarine and has supervised the testing of long-range missiles, as reported by the state media. These actions underscore North Korea's ongoing commitment to enhance its military capabilities in light of rising tensions in the region.

The state media outlet KCNA revealed that Kim visited the submarine construction facility alongside his daughter, Ju Ae, who is regarded by some analysts as a prospective successor. The submarine, weighing 8,700 tons, is designed to launch surface-to-air missiles and features a nuclear reactor. Experts believe the vessel is nearing operational readiness.

Meanwhile, on the country’s east coast, North Korea carried out tests of long-range missiles that can strike targets up to 200 kilometers away. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the missile tests and stated that they were aware of the launch preparations, taking necessary precautions. KCNA described these missile tests as pivotal in advancing high-altitude strategic weaponry.

Kim Jong Un underscored the need for advancing nuclear capabilities and modernizing the navy, labeling these steps as vital for national security amidst what he deemed an increasingly perilous global landscape. The North criticized South Korea’s intentions to build nuclear-powered submarines in collaboration with the United States, stating that such developments heighten regional tensions.

Additionally, North Korea condemned the recent docking of the U.S. nuclear-powered submarine Greeneville at Busan for shore leave and logistics, referring to the visit as a move that exacerbates military tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The country also expressed concern over Japan’s nuclear ambitions, alleging it is spurred by South Korea’s military advancements.

Analysts suggest that Kim's presence at both the submarine site and during missile testing conveys a significant political statement, reinforcing the regime's resolve to bolster its defensive capabilities and counter perceived threats from neighboring nations and the United States.

The advancement of nuclear submarines and sophisticated missiles aligns with North Korea's overarching objective of maintaining military strength and asserting influence across the region. Experts warn that these developments could heighten tensions in East Asia and hinder diplomatic engagement regarding denuclearization.

By personally directing these initiatives, Kim Jong Un is strengthening his image as a resolute leader prioritizing national defense. His daughter’s participation hints at potential plans for leadership continuity in the future.

North Korea’s military pursuits, encompassing submarine development and missile tests, will continue to be a significant concern for neighboring entities, the United States, and global organizations observing regional security.
