Saudi Arabia Wins FAO Award for Sustainable Agriculture

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was honored with the Technical Recognition Award from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the “South-South and Triangular Cooperation” category. The award celebrates excellence in projects that promote sustainable development, food security, and innovative agricultural solutions.

Recognition for the Saudi Reef Program

The award specifically acknowledges the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, known as Saudi Reef, which is recognized as the world’s largest agricultural development initiative. The program has been commended for implementing innovative projects and adopting best practices that strengthen food security and agri-food systems.

Minister Receives Award on Behalf of Kingdom

Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Abdulrahman Alfadley, received the award on behalf of Saudi Arabia during a ceremony in Rome. The event was held as part of the FAO’s 80th anniversary celebrations and coincided with the fifth annual World Food Forum, taking place from October 10 to 17.

Saudi Leadership in Sustainable Agriculture

Eng. Alfadley highlighted that the award reflects Saudi Arabia’s leadership in developing the rural agricultural sector. He noted that the recognition showcases Saudi Arabia’s successful model for sustainable agricultural development at local, regional, and global levels. The achievements also underline the Kingdom’s strength in building international partnerships that support food security and rural development.

Achievements of the Saudi Reef Program

The Saudi Reef Program has made remarkable progress over the last five years. It has empowered over 80,000 beneficiaries nationwide, providing more than SAR 3 billion in direct financial aid across its eight sectors. The program’s investments have contributed to raising farmers’ incomes and creating over 70,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Boosting Agricultural Production

In terms of production, the program has successfully planted more than 15 million agricultural seedlings and supported the production of approximately 250 million kilograms of agricultural goods. These efforts have significantly strengthened the Kingdom’s agricultural economy and enhanced food self-sufficiency.

Alignment with Saudi Vision 2030

The program aligns closely with Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to improve food security, advance rural development, and promote environmental sustainability. By supporting innovation and capacity-building in agriculture, the Saudi Reef Program provides a model for other nations seeking to develop sustainable agri-food systems.

Global Recognition and Impact

The FAO award also reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing role in global agricultural development. By sharing best practices and partnering with international organizations, the Kingdom contributes to global food security and sustainable agricultural initiatives. This recognition emphasizes the importance of cooperative projects in achieving sustainable development goals worldwide.
