In a significant move for regional space collaboration, Kuwait and the UAE have initiated a strategic partnership. H.H. Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the Prime Minister of Kuwait, hosted Salem Humaid AlMarri, the Director General of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), along with his team at Bayan Palace. The agenda was centered on advancing cooperation in the domains of space science, technology, and research initiatives.
Their discussions underlined the importance of fostering knowledge exchange between the MBRSC of the UAE and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), particularly focusing on satellite technology, remote sensing, and applied space research. Both nations deliberated on prospective collaborations aimed at promoting innovation, capacity building, and enhanced scientific development in the region.
Dignitaries at the meeting included Abdulaziz Al-Dakhil, the Head of the Prime Minister’s Diwan; Sheikh Dr. Meshaal Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah of the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority; Dr. Ameenah Farhan from KFAS; and UAE Ambassador H.E. Dr. Matar Hamed AlNeyadi.
A key outcome of the discussions was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MBRSC and KFAS. This agreement lays out a comprehensive framework for collaboration in space sciences, research advancement, and capacity development at a national level. It mirrors the UAE’s dedication to enhancing Arab nations' participation in space innovation and scientific progress.
The MoU includes cooperation in essential fields such as space exploration, satellite development, applied research, and remote sensing. It also endeavors to create specialized training programs for students, engineers, and researchers, while promoting joint scientific initiatives aimed at sustainable development and competitiveness within the regional space sector.
Beyond formal agreements, there is a vision to foster an Arab space ecosystem founded on knowledge exchange, human capital growth, and lasting collaborations in space science and technology. For Kuwait, this MoU fortifies its ambition to cultivate a strong scientific and research foundation to spearhead regional space initiatives.
KFAS has stated that this partnership bolsters efforts to set up the Kuwait National Centre for Space Research, which, with the backing of Amiri authorities and Kuwait University, will facilitate coordination of space initiatives and nurture young Kuwaiti talents for future careers in satellite science and space missions.
Through this agreement, Kuwait and the UAE are paving the way for a more significant regional engagement in space science, intertwining innovation, education, and research to position the Gulf as a center for excellence in the global space arena.
