A Kuwaiti court has fined an assistant physician 500 dinars after convicting him of stealing antidepressant medication worth only 3.5 dinars (about $11.4) from a government hospital. This case has brought attention to issues surrounding mental health care access and security weaknesses in Kuwait’s public health system.
The Court of Cassation issued the ruling after reviewing evidence, including CCTV footage, which showed the doctor wearing a mask while taking restricted medication from the hospital’s storage.
The thefts came to light when hospital staff noticed repeated disappearances of psychiatric drugs, prompting an internal investigation, according to local media reports.
Authorities detained the doctor after receiving a tip from an employee. During questioning, the doctor admitted to stealing medication on four separate occasions. He explained that he had been suffering from depression and anxiety and was unable to get the medication legally, as it is only available to psychiatric patients.
