The Kyrgyz Republic is advancing its industrial and energy landscape through significant upgrades to the Junda oil refinery situated in Kara-Balta, Chui Region. On May 7, 2026, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Erlist Akunbekov, visited the facility to assess the advancement of the modernization efforts and discuss future industrial development initiatives linked to the site.
During his visit, Deputy Chairman Akunbekov conducted a conference with refinery management and staff, alongside government officials involved in the project. The primary focus of the discussions was on the refinery's current operations, modernization status, and its pivotal role in enhancing Kyrgyzstan's domestic fuel production and industrial development.
Officials indicated that upon completion of the modernization, the refinery is expected to significantly contribute to the local supply of fuels and lubricants. The government anticipates that augmenting local refining capabilities will curtail reliance on imported oil products, thereby bolstering energy independence and fostering industrial self-reliance within the nation.
Agency representatives and refinery management provided detailed insights regarding the ongoing modernization stages, including readiness of production sites, equipment overhauls, and enhancements to infrastructure. Project officials reported that progress is on track, with completion anticipated later this year.
Discussions also concentrated on a new investment venture to develop an industrial park adjacent to the refinery. Government representatives highlighted that this initiative is likely to attract further investments, promote manufacturing, and generate new business prospects in the area.
Deputy Chairman Akunbekov underscored the project's strategic significance for Kyrgyzstan's economic and industrial growth. He pointed out that the refinery update and industrial park establishment could substantially elevate refining capabilities, support local production, and create job opportunities for residents in the Chui Region and neighboring areas.
Officials reiterated the need for collaboration among government entities and private investors to ensure successful execution of the project. The Junda China Petroleum Company, the refinery's owner, is collaborating with Kyrgyz authorities to enhance industrial infrastructure while adhering to necessary operational and environmental regulations.
By the end of the meeting, Akunbekov reviewed progress reports from government bodies and refinery management, assigning follow-up actions to pertinent institutions. Authorities emphasized the importance of adhering to project timelines and ensuring that the modernization efforts advance without delays. There is a shared belief that the refinery enhancement will yield lasting benefits for the nation's industrial economy.
The Junda refinery modernization is considered a vital element of Kyrgyzstan’s ongoing economic development agenda. Government officials believe that the initiative will fortify the country's energy sector, elevate industrial production capacities, and inspire additional investments in infrastructure and manufacturing in the future.
