Iconic Soap Star Anthony Geary, Famous for Luke Spencer, Dies at 78

The renowned actor Anthony Geary, celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Luke Spencer on the famed soap opera General Hospital, has tragically passed away at the age of 78. Geary succumbed to complications from surgery on Sunday, December 14, 2023, leaving behind a legacy enriched with decades of contributions to daytime television. In a heartfelt statement, Geary's husband, Claudio Gama, expressed the shock felt by family and friends, saying, “For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”

Geary introduced the character of Luke Spencer in 1978, becoming integral to General Hospital's narrative for nearly 40 years. His on-screen romance with Laura Collins, portrayed by Genie Francis, remains one of youth's most cherished soap opera tales. Their wedding in 1981 drew a record 30 million viewers, establishing it as the most-watched episode in daytime history and cementing their status as the quintessential soap opera pair.

Although Geary stepped back from his full-time role in General Hospital in 2015, he made occasional returns, with his final appearance in 2017. After retirement, he relocated from Los Angeles to Amsterdam and tied the knot with Claudio Gama in 2020, heralding a new chapter in his life.

Geary’s profound influence on television was echoed by General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini, who expressed deep sorrow, stating that he and the “entire General Hospital family” are grieving his loss. Fans around the globe share in the mourning of a beloved actor whose impact transcended the genre, creating unforgettable moments in TV history.
