Lennart Karl Misses 2026 World Cup After Injury in Training

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a significant blow to Germany's World Cup ambitions, young midfielder Lennart Karl has been sidelined after suffering a thigh injury during a training session. The 18-year-old, who plays for Bayern Munich, incurred a muscle bundle tear in his left thigh while practicing with the national squad in Chicago.

Germany's head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, announced the injury news ahead of an exhibition match against the United States. Following an immediate medical evaluation, it was confirmed that Karl would be unable to participate in the World Cup. Assan Ouedraogo will join the team as his replacement.

This injury is a major disappointment for Karl as well as the German team. The talented youngster had an exceptional season with Bayern Munich, playing a crucial role in their domestic double victory and their run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. His outstanding performances secured him a spot in the Germany squad, marking him as one of the nation's most promising young talents.

Nagelsmann expressed his regret regarding Karl’s injury, highlighting the midfielder's creativity, speed, and positive demeanor that endeared him to the squad. He remarked on the shock this injury presents to the team but emphasized Karl's youth, assuring that he would have future chances in international competitions.

The coach also welcomed Assan Ouedraogo into the squad, recognizing him as another gifted player with potential. Nagelsmann is optimistic about Ouedraogo’s ability to rise to the occasion on the global stage.

Germany has been gearing up in the United States for the World Cup, which is set to kick off next week. As four-time world champions, they aim to recover from disappointing early exits in both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. Their last triumph on the international scene came in 2014 when they clinched the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Germany is in Group E and will open their World Cup journey against Curacao on June 14, followed by matches against Ivory Coast and Ecuador. The team is eager to establish a strong performance in their pursuit of a fifth World Cup title.

Despite the setback of losing Lennart Karl, Germany remains hopeful that emerging talents will step forward to support their aspirations at the World Cup.
