Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has said that Mohamed Salah must continue to earn his place in the team after being left on the bench in two consecutive Premier League games. Salah, 33, did not play in Liverpool’s 2-0 win against West Ham United and came on as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland.
Salah, who signed a two-year contract extension in April, has scored five goals in 19 matches this season but has struggled to maintain the level that helped Liverpool win the league last year. Van Dijk stressed that no player has unlimited credit and everyone must perform to stay in the starting lineup.
“Mo has been doing well, but the manager made a decision for the last two games. We all want the best for the club,” Van Dijk said. He added that Salah remains a key player and will continue to play a significant role in Liverpool’s campaign.
Liverpool are currently ninth in the Premier League with 22 points from 14 matches, 11 points behind Arsenal. Van Dijk emphasized that Salah is still a fantastic player and Liverpool needs him back at his best to help the team improve its results this season.
