A new survey has indicated that in Malaysia, consumers are prioritizing food delivery options over dining out at restaurants as they adjust to escalating living expenses. These findings illustrate a notable shift in how households manage their financial resources amidst economic pressures.
Research from Rakuten Insight shows a significant rise in the number of Malaysians intending to cut back on dining out, increasing from 52.9% in March to 61.6% in April. Conversely, those looking to scale back on food delivery only rose slightly from 30% to 32%.
Experts indicate that dining out is often categorized as a discretionary expenditure, encompassing not just the meal but also the environment and social interactions, as well as added costs like transportation. Food delivery, however, is perceived as more economical and suitable, particularly for busy families where cooking may not always be practical.
Additionally, the survey highlights that many Malaysians view food delivery as a necessary service rather than a luxury, especially among working couples and those with demanding jobs. As financial strains persist, this trend signals a move toward convenience-focused spending with a focus on essential purchases.
