Basketball icon Michael Jordan delivered a heartfelt homage to Pep Guardiola during an emotional farewell orchestrated by Manchester City for their departing manager, marking the end of his remarkable tenure with the club. The tribute stood out as one of the major highlights of a poignant gathering attended by numerous Manchester City fans.
In celebration of Guardiola's departure at the conclusion of the 2025-26 football season, Manchester City hosted a grand farewell occasion that featured an open-top bus parade through the streets of Manchester, followed by a large gathering at the Co-op Live arena close to the Etihad Stadium. Approximately 19,000 supporters attended to honor Guardiola’s incredible decade at the club.
During the event, a special video message from Michael Jordan was projected on large screens within the arena. In his message, the NBA legend congratulated Guardiola on his outstanding football journey and acknowledged the remarkable success he enjoyed with Manchester City. Jordan also extended his best wishes for Guardiola's retirement, humorously suggesting he could enjoy more golf moving forward. The surprise tribute earned thunderous applause from fans present.
Throughout the farewell proceedings, Guardiola was visibly moved as supporters chanted his name and celebrated his legacy. Over his ten years at Manchester City, the Spanish manager transformed the team into one of the world's elite football clubs, securing multiple Premier League titles, domestic trophies, and the club's inaugural UEFA Champions League title.
The celebrations also featured tributes from former players, entertainers, and football personalities. Notable attendees included Oasis' Noel Gallagher, ex-captain Vincent Kompany, in addition to other Manchester City legends who came to pay their respects to Guardiola’s immense contributions.
Despite the sweltering heat, fans lined Manchester's streets to partake in the parade. Players from Manchester City's men’s, women’s, and youth squads joined the festivities, creating a celebratory atmosphere throughout the city, with many supporters carrying banners expressing gratitude to Guardiola for his contributions.
Officials from Manchester City announced plans for permanent tributes to Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium. These plans include renaming portions of the stadium in his honor and constructing a statue commemorating his achievements, signaling Guardiola's significant impact on the club and English football over the last decade.
In his farewell address, Guardiola expressed gratitude towards the fans, players, and club staff, describing his time at Manchester City as a deeply rewarding experience. He became visibly emotional when reflecting on the connection he forged with supporters throughout his stay at the club.
Football analysts agree that Guardiola leaves Manchester City with the legacy of one of the top managers in football history. His tenure heralded a style of attacking play, tactical innovation, and breathtaking success in both England and Europe, and his influence on the sport is anticipated to resonate even after his exit from the club.
