Musk Envisions a Future Where Work is Optional in Two Decades

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Elon Musk, the visionary behind Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, has made a striking prediction: in the coming years, working might transform into a choice rather than a necessity. During his appearance on Nikhil Kamath’s “People by WTF” podcast, Musk proposed that artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics could lead to such significant societal changes.

“It might not be too long from now. Perhaps in less than 20 years, work could be more optional. Essentially, work could be treated like a hobby,” Musk stated. He elaborated that with advancements in AI and robotics, all goods and services desired by humans could be provided, making work a personal preference.

Musk created a vision where AI and robots would manage nearly all tasks currently performed by humans. “If you can envision it, you can have it,” he remarked. He foresees a future where AI satisfies every human need to such an extent that its operations would eventually become independent of human requirements.

Musk proposed that such a technological evolution could render money considerably less important. “If AI and robotics become capable enough to meet all human necessities, the significance of money would diminish significantly,” he remarked, suggesting that energy production might replace money as the primary measure of wealth.

Previously, Musk has indicated that such advancements in AI and humanoid robots could eradicate poverty by ensuring equitable access to wealth and resources. He imagines a future where people can focus on hobbies, creativity, and personal passions rather than laboring for survival.

Even if such predictions seem outlandish, they resonate with ongoing debates in technological and economic fields regarding automation, universal basic income, and AI's enduring societal impact. Regardless of whether his foresight comes to fruition in a decade, or two, it ignites crucial discussions on the changing dynamics between humanity, technology, and work.
