Rising Tennis Star Michael Zheng Confronts Prize Money Dilemma After Australian Open Triumph

Post by : Meena Hassan

Emerging American tennis sensation Michael Zheng is captivating audiences at the Australian Open, but now finds himself in a tricky predicament regarding his prize money. The 21-year-old college athlete impressed by toppling former quarter-finalist Sebastian Korda in a dramatic five-set match during the first round.

Zheng's stunning display at Melbourne Park has already secured him a minimum of A$225,000 (approximately US$150,000), which could increase to A$327,750 if he triumphs in his upcoming match against 32nd seed Corentin Moutet.

However, despite his remarkable earnings, Zheng may be obligated to forfeit a significant portion of the prize money due to stringent US college tennis regulations. These guidelines restrict the amount college athletes can retain to US$10,000 annually to uphold their amateur status.

Currently in his senior year studying psychology at Columbia University, Zheng expressed, “I have one more semester to complete, which I fully intend to finish. After the tournament, I’ll head back to my studies.”

He also revealed intentions to consult his coach regarding the prize money predicament. “I’ve heard that since this is my senior spring, there might be an opportunity to keep some of it, but I want to confirm before accepting anything. I want to avoid potential issues.”

This scenario underscores the challenging balancing act that numerous promising college athletes juggle when competing at elite levels prior to turning professional. For the time being, Zheng is concentrating on his matches while striving to align his educational commitments.
