Trump and Netanyahu Set to Discuss Gaza Ceasefire and Regional Tensions

Post by : Meena Hassan

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on December 29, with the objective of resuming the halted ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. This pivotal discussion will also delve into Israel's security concerns regarding Hezbollah and Iran's recent military actions.

Netanyahu confirmed in December that Trump invited him to engage in discussions centered on progress, as the US pushes for the establishment of a transitional government and the introduction of an international security presence in Gaza. While Trump has alluded to the meeting, the White House has not yet provided an official statement.

Netanyahu is expected to visit Trump at Mar-a-Lago, where they will outline the forthcoming steps for achieving a ceasefire in Gaza while addressing the threats posed by Iran and Lebanon. Despite Washington's mediation of various ceasefires in conflict regions, Israel remains vigilant about its adversaries rebuilding military strength.

The ceasefire agreement forged in October stipulates that Israel withdraw from Gaza while Hamas must disarm and relinquish territorial control. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has underscored the pressing requirement to establish a Palestinian technocratic administration to manage Gaza prior to the deployment of international forces, in line with a recent UN resolution.

Even with the ceasefire in place, skirmishes continue, as Israel and Hamas trade accusations of breach. Hamas is standing firm in its stance against disarmament and continues to expand its influence, while Israeli forces remain stationed in various areas of Gaza. Israel has warned that its military operations may recommence should Hamas fail to disarm willingly.

Meanwhile, in Lebanon, a US-supported ceasefire brokered in November 2024 is aimed at disarming Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant entity. Reports indicate that Lebanon is close to finalizing this disarmament, although Hezbollah has been resistant, prompting Israeli forces to frequently strike to hinder any rearmament. Concurrently, Iran is conducting missile drills amid heightened regional discord.

Netanyahu has stated that Israel seeks to avoid conflict with Iran but plans to raise concerns regarding Tehran's behavior during his meeting with Trump. Earlier this year, Trump sanctioned US strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, although recent signals from his administration suggest a willingness to explore dialogue with Tehran.
