Netflix Reassesses Game Strategy, Shuts Down Boss Fight Studio

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Netflix has decided to shut down Boss Fight Entertainment, the video game studio based in Texas that it acquired in 2022. This move marks a significant change in the company’s gaming trajectory, confirmed by sources familiar with the situation, indicating a strategic realignment within Netflix's burgeoning but challenging gaming division.

Boss Fight gained attention for its development of Squid Game: Unleashed, a mobile game released last year that turned one of Netflix’s most popular shows into an interactive adventure. Additionally, the studio played a role in Netflix Stories, a product series that transformed renowned Netflix originals into games. Users will still have access to both Squid Game: Unleashed and Netflix Stories despite the closure.

This decision comes under the guidance of Alain Tascan, Netflix’s VP of Games, who aims to shift the platform away from its previous mobile-centric strategy. The focus now is on creating party games, children’s games, and narrative-rich titles primarily intended for TV screens—aligning closer to the ways most Netflix users interact with content.

Recently, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters discussed new interactive offerings like Boggle and Pictionary, signaling a broader approach toward family-oriented and mainstream gaming.

Despite ambitious moves made by Netflix to enter the gaming sphere, which included acquiring three studios between 2021 and 2022, including Boss Fight, this closure illustrates a disconnect between its early mobile strategy and user preferences. This latest decision underscores Netflix’s continuous effort to adapt and establish itself in a competitive gaming landscape, where streaming and interactive entertainment are increasingly merging.
