EAD and UAEU unite to boost UAE’s sustainability goals

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a major push towards achieving the UAE’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) have entered into a strategic research partnership aimed at turning science into real-world sustainability solutions.

The collaboration marks the launch of a joint research programme that will fund up to ten projects tackling critical areas such as climate change mitigation, biodiversity protection, marine ecosystem health, clean water management, and digital and nature-based solutions.

A joint oversight committee, comprising experts from both institutions, will lead the initiative — setting priorities, selecting research proposals, and monitoring progress to ensure that all projects align with the UAE’s environmental strategies and EAD’s governance framework.

This partnership builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023 between EAD and several universities, reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing scientific excellence and environmental innovation. It also enhances the Abu Dhabi Environmental Research Network (ADERN), which connects top universities, research centres, and private institutions to drive collaborative science-based solutions for environmental challenges.

The initiative stands out not just for its research depth but also for its focus on empowering the next generation. UAEU students will have the opportunity to work alongside EAD experts, gaining hands-on experience in applied research and contributing to national sustainability reporting such as the UAE SDG Report and the Voluntary National Review.

With this partnership, EAD and UAEU are setting a strong example of how collaboration between academia and government can lead to transformative action. It reflects Abu Dhabi’s growing leadership in embedding sustainability, innovation, and environmental responsibility at the heart of national development.
