India Approves 17 New Electronics Manufacturing Units Under ECMS

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a decisive enhancement to its electronics manufacturing sector, the Indian government has approved 17 new initiatives under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) on Monday. This decision elevates the total sanctioned projects to 24, representing a robust effort to foster a self-reliant component ecosystem.

The newly sanctioned projects encompass three camera module production units, nine multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing plants, two optical transceiver facilities, along with various essential components for mobile gadgets and other electronic devices. The collective investments are expected to be around ₹7,172 crore, leading to a production value of approximately ₹65,111 crore in the coming years.

These manufacturing facilities will be distributed across nine states and Union Territories, including regions like Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, and Madhya Pradesh, fostering a broader regional development of India's emerging component sector. Officials noted that the scheme strategically focuses on critical components that can support the country’s long-term electronics ambitions, avoiding a widespread distribution of incentives.

Among those receiving approvals are prominent local firms including Aequs Consumer Products, Jabil Circuit India, Zetwerk subsidiaries Zetfab India and Zetchem Supply Chain Services, Uno Minda, and Syrma SGS unit Syrma Mobility. Many of these companies are poised to establish state-of-the-art facilities, including India's first optical transceiver production unit, the inaugural 40-layer PCB plant, and the country's first quartz crystal manufacturing site—key ingredients for next-gen electronics.

The government has consistently emphasized the necessity for improved domestic designs, superior product quality, and a more robust supply chain for raw materials. The ECMS initiative aligns with this vision, aiming to diminish reliance on imports and bolster India's status as a dependable global manufacturing hub.

As the electronics industry continues to flourish, these new projects depict a significant acceleration in India’s journey to become a leading manufacturer of components, solidifying the base for an array of products from smartphones and household appliances to advanced digital technologies.
